ATS-friendly resume format for India: what to include and what to skip
Most applications through Naukri, LinkedIn, foundit or a company careers page pass through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a recruiter reads them. The format that works is simple, predictable and honest.
An ATS-friendly resume in India uses one column, standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills), a common font at 10–12 pt, reverse-chronological experience, no text inside images or tables, and is exported as a text-based PDF unless the portal asks for Word. Keep it to one page for freshers and two pages for most experienced roles.
- Use standard section names so the ATS maps your content to the right fields.
- Keep a single column for portals; save designed layouts for referrals and portfolios.
- Put keywords from the job description where they are true: summary, recent roles, skills.
- Skip photo, date of birth, marital status and religion unless an employer explicitly asks.
What an ATS actually does
An applicant tracking system stores applications and lets recruiters search and filter them. It reads your file, splits it into fields like job titles, employers, dates, education and skills, and ranks or filters candidates using the recruiter’s keywords and criteria. If the parser cannot read a section, that content effectively disappears.
That is why format matters: the goal is not to trick the system but to make sure everything you write is read correctly by both the software and the person who opens it next.
The section order that works
- Header: name, phone, professional email, city, LinkedIn or portfolio link.
- Summary: two to four lines on your role, years of experience, domain and strongest skills.
- Experience: reverse-chronological; title, employer, location, dates (month and year), then 3–6 achievement bullets.
- Projects: essential for freshers and tech roles; include tools and the outcome.
- Skills: grouped (for example Languages, Tools, Cloud) rather than one long list.
- Education: degree, institution, year; add CGPA or percentage if it helps.
- Certifications and awards: name, issuer and year.
Freshers can move Education and Projects above Experience. Senior candidates can add a short Key Achievements section before Experience.
Formatting rules
- One column for portal applications. Two-column layouts can work but are riskier with older parsers.
- Standard fonts such as Roboto, Arial, Calibri or a clean serif, body 10–12 pt.
- No important text in headers, footers, text boxes, icons or images.
- Dates in a consistent format, such as “Jan 2023 – Present”.
- Plain bullets, not symbols or emoji.
- Export to PDF and test: if you can select and copy the text, a parser can read it.
Personal details on Indian resumes
Older Indian resume formats often include a “Personal Details” block with date of birth, father’s name, marital status, languages and a declaration. For most private-sector roles these add length without helping, and some can invite bias. Include city and languages if relevant, and leave the rest out unless the employer asks.
Government, PSU and some campus applications use their own forms, so follow the official format there. CareerVani’s Government & PSU template is laid out for these readers.
How long should a resume be?
Freshers and early-career candidates: one page. Most professionals with 3–10 years of experience: up to two pages. Senior leaders, academics and doctors may go longer, but the first page still has to make the case on its own.
Using keywords honestly
Read the job description and note the skills, tools and responsibilities that appear more than once. If you genuinely have them, use the same wording in your summary, your most recent role and your skills section. Do not paste the job description, hide keywords in white text or list tools you cannot discuss in an interview.

Frequently asked questions
Is PDF or Word better for ATS?
A text-based PDF is accepted and parsed well by most modern ATS and Indian job portals. Use Word only when the employer or portal specifically asks for it.
Can an ATS read a two-column resume?
Many modern systems can, but some older parsers read across columns and mix up content. For portal applications a single column is the safer choice.
Should I add a photo to my resume in India?
Usually no for private-sector roles. Add one only if the employer asks, for example in some aviation, hospitality or modelling roles.
What is a good ATS score?
There is no universal ATS score. Each employer’s system and filters are different, so focus on a clear format and relevant, true keywords.
